My experience in buying a Kia Soul

I recently went through buying a Soul. I really liked the veh after test driving it. I was shown a few different models and was told I could get whatever colour I wanted in the 4U luxury model. The price certainly looked right for all that was there. However, when it came time to write the purchase the piant, milk shake (off white), was suddenly a colour that required an extra $200 payment. Since there wasn't one on the lot and after advising they would easily get me the colour I wanted, they now wanted another $200 to look for a white one. Then came a $500 hit for the "paper work". Then I was advised that ever so special white colour requires a "coating" which will only cost me another $160. Undercoating that would of course cost even more because if I don't have it apparently my Soul will melt away. In any event, the price add ons they divulge only at point of sale seems to be a slippery way of hidding the true cost. Just wondering if anyone else had these costs thrown at them.

I assume since you did not say or fill in your profile. You are in CANADA since it is a 4U?

That said all that you wrote is a mixed bag of "standard" for many makers and some "let's see how far we can push" business practices at least here in the USA. I do not know about CDN. Also I sense a small bit of salesman fast/double talk while showing you the car to hook you in. As well as a bit of assuming too much and not hearing well/fully understanding what was being said to you. It is a common issue these days. Is this your first new car? Yes what you went thru is not the utopia sales experience it might have been, but it is not the worst a dealer could have gave you either. Trust me. For further clarification please PM me and I will line item for you what you said in your post and why or why not it might have been correct noramlly. Not here if you like. :)

Hey I manage a dealer in Toronto, and we see dealers do this all around us.

Actual Standard Charges (Ontario)

Freight: 1650
Air Tax: 100
Tire tax: 29.20
OMVIC: 5
Admin: varies by dealership and that covers the cost of clean up, paperwork and full tank of gas.

As for your soul, and charges for paint

1H - Blue Stone $0
A1 - Vanilla Shake $0
1D - Polar $0
1E - Molten $0
3D - Sterling $150
Y1 - Lava $150
I2 - Demin $150
9H - Onyx $200
IM - Titanium $200
I7 - Mint $200

The undercoating and paint protection is an option although they are making it seem mandatory.

Cheers,
Rob

Like he said some fees are standard and vari from place to place in $ with local/state requirements. Others are not.

In SC USA other then these Four the rest vari at times.
$299 paperwork is extra in top of MSRP
$695 freight is part (a line item like options are too) of the MSRP and not extra on top of MSRP
First Tank Of Gas is part of the MSRP. A KIA USA sales courtisey think. In a way you are paying for it really. But you do not see if they charge you $3 a gal or $10 a gal to fill the 12.7 tank with 87RM. my salesmen did not ask on the + but on my SPORT he did and I got 89RM then when he went to get it at the station down street.
$300 state sales tax and is capped at $300 but other wise is 10% of car. So up to $3000 retail $ is less then $300 and over $3000 retial is a freebie and only $300. And is extra on top of MSRP

And Colors, some are extra cost yes thou not the same ones I recall in the USA as he told us in Canada. Very few here are extra.

Blue Stone=Not in USA
Vanilla Shake=DUNE not a metalic
Polar=White (bright) not a metalic
Molten=Molten not a metalic. I have this on my SPORT. It is also refered to in places as Tomato Red
Sterling=Bright Silver a metalic
Lava=Java a metalic and looks like a dark brown coffee/merlot red highlights
Denium=Denium a metalic
Onyx=Shadow (black) but is metalic and not a deep gloss piano black
Titanium=Titanuim (gunmetal grey) a metalic and I have this on my +.
Mint=Alien (Kermit the froggy green) a metalic.
Not in Canada it seems=Ignition we have here in the USA is a Brunt Pumpkin Orange Metalic.

NOTE: Due to the term differences it might be possible that I have the Java and Ignition backwards/reversed. And they do not have Our Java then.

DOC FEE's are a mixed bag. If not outrageious $ it is ok. How precious is your time? You want to take two days off work or MORE! to run around and do title work/BANK work/KIA warrnety validation work/DMV/PLATES/FEDEX stuff/or be a general COURIER SERVICE? on your own for yourself? $50-$175 might sound nice then right?

Not sure where you get FREIGHT is a rip-off. Got to get the car to dealership from a port or GA USA. That is by Train or Truck or Boat (Hawaii). You think so go and pick the car up at the KIA port or entry sales dealership then. Not near your home nice and comfy like. Drive eight hours or more then. You do the work while taking off work, bet the $695 will seem really reasonable then right? And when your done you got a new car with 1000 miles on it maybe before it even see's your driveway for the first time. Do you like not getting paid while off work to do it? Well do you think those that are doing it for you (not putting miles on the car too) like not getting paid to do that job either? Bet you would jump up and down and scream bloody murder even if someone did it for free for you, but you STILL got a car with 1000 miles on it when they got back from the PORT with it. :)

You want to buy a 2011 Sorento then haul your butt to GA USA from Canada. Bet the "one way" Airfare and room rental for one or two nights on the drive back to Canada will be way more then $695.

$150-200 for a Metalic paint extra is not bad on a $16-17K in the first place car. But no a FINDERS FEE for White is wrong, yes. If it were a Metalic White PEARL which both our whites are not it would be ok. Our WHITE and DUNE/VANILLA SHAKE are not those. That is a rip-off plain and simple.

You want an EYE OPENER! Go look at a MB or BMW or AUDI Or some LEXUS and see the $1000-2000 fee extra for a color on a 60K car! And do not even ask what you will pay EXTRA for PAINT to be put on a ROLLS ROYCE when you order one. :)

Of course we all could just not know about it all when there is not FRIEGHT and no DOC FEE's disclosed to you at all on any new car. But the MSRP of your new car on the window that was before $16,500 is now not that but MSRP of $17,650-17,750 on your scale where it is built in for everyone the same. Weather it was cheaper in your area or not you pay the same as the most expensive area guy does. Like that option? ;)

In the sales world.. it is called "up selling".

When I sat down to buy my Soul 2U (Lava)...

Once you agree to buy the car you are escorted to the "business office" where the dealer tries to give you the "business" :-o

I turned down the dealer's undercoat/rust proofing for $1000... I use Rust Check yearly so that is about 8 years worth of rustproofing.
I also declined the other extras/services that they tried to sell me.

I HATE the extra charge of the dealers using nitrogen gas to fill the tires at a cost of $100 per tire!!!! That is a RIPOFF since air is composed of over 70% nitrogen already. So I am being charged $100 per tire to add about 25% more nitrogen to the tire. :-\

Otherwise, I really like my Lava Soul.. great car in the cold weather... warms up really fast and the heated front seats are fantastic. :D
